Medicare initiatives from Scotland
Serve our people, our society, our nation

Following the first initiative on Medical education for doctors attending Overseas Medical camp, the second lecture was held at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on 18th February 2012. Dr. Pradeep Kumar, Consultant Rheumatologist presented on 'Rheumatology in Indian Practice'.

The programme commenced with a short quiz followed by a lecture on common rheumatological disorders encountered in Indian society. Osteoprorosis, Osteoarthritis, Infective arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis were addressed.

Patient Education: Dr Kumar highlighted the importance of exposure to sunlight and recommended daily exposure for at least 10 minutes as it is one of the most important sources of Vitamin D. With many people in India living in apartments, adults and children are getting less exposure to sunlight which in turn reduces the formation of vitamin D, in turn predisposing patients to arthritis/rickets.

Medical Education: Dr Kumar further educated the medics on different aspects of Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis and Rheumatoid arthritis, highlighted salient features of each of these disorders and a simple approach in identifying them in a rural setting. He laid out simple treatment plans for the management for the above conditions.

10 doctors attended this session. They were Consultants and Associate specialists from various specialities including ENT, Gastroenterology, Ophthalmology and Psychiatry.
