Service Wing - Sathya Sai Cataract Surgery Programme: South Africa

This year’s Sai Ideal Healthcare Seminar focussed our minds on the delivery of Sai Ideal Healthcare through Sustained Partnerships.

At the seminar, we heard of an opportunity to engage in a much needed Service activity, performing free cataract surgeries for the people of South Africa. By Bhagawan’s Grace this project will shortly commence, in partnership with our brothers and sisters of the Sai Organisation of South Africa and The South African National Council for the Blind.

Within the African continent, South Africa is in many ways a first world country offering high standards of medical care, much of which remains inaccessible to the poorest of its citizens. There remain significant socio-economic differences and there are millions who continue to live without access to clean drinking water, basic sanitation and free healthcare facilities.

At present, it is estimated that 35,000 South African people are awaiting life changing Cataract surgeries. These people have no means of accessing the care they need outside of the state run healthcare services. These services are often overwhelmed and many people face waiting times of up to 2 – 3 years.

Sathya Sai Cataract Surgery Programme

The Sai Organisation, in partnership with the South African National Council for the Blind (SANCB) has responded to this need, by providing free Cataract surgeries to people on the state hospital waiting lists. The government of South Africa has acknowledged this outpouring of Love, and provided access to state hospital theatres and facilities to facilitate this programme.

The Sathya Sai Healthcare National Coordinating Committee UK is delighted to announce that the first team of Ophthalmologists from UK will be joining this sacred project between the 2nd – 9th February 2013. We will thereafter be coordinating a regular rota through which Ophthalmologists in the UK can participate in this service project. Each team will fly to South Africa and undertake cataract surgeries for one week.

We invite the participation of all Consultant Ophthalmologists. If you require more information or to volunteer for this project please email your details to saihealthcare@srisathyasai.org.uk

We sincerely pray for Bhagawan’s blessings for the success of this Project.
