Region 4 - Moving and Handling: Training for Volunteers

Rugby Sai Centre organised a training session for volunteers to help understand the right way to assist guests invited at events. The timing of this training course was to prepare volunteers for Global Service Day programmes due to take place in July. The course was run by two qualified trained nurses (Debbie and Michelle) from University Hospitals Coventry and was held locally in Rugby on Sunday 7th July 2013.

Trainer Michelle went through some legal information about Health and Safety regulations and legislation which were relevant to us, both as volunteers and in a work environment. This was followed by Debbie running through a number of activities which covered risk assessment, assisting guests from wheel chairs to the car or to the toilet, helping them to stand up and how to deal with falls. They showed us equipment which can be used to help guests with the different activities and alternatives, when proper equipment is not available. The day was filled with demonstrations that allowed us all to get involved in working through scenarios.

The training session gave us the skills to ensure that we assist guests in the proper manner and we as volunteers do not get hurt.
