Spiritual Wing - The Spirit of Christmas

The Message of Christ

Christmas is a special celebration; one that is very close to the hearts of all; it is no wonder that it has been sung about as being “the most wonderful time of the year”. However, in an increasingly commercialised world, we find our senses being ensnared by the streams of decorative lighting, festive edible treats and endless advertising campaigns. This often produces a fertile medium for ever increasing desires and distracts us from the true Significance of the day.

It is against this backdrop, that we realise how fortunate we are to have Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, bring to our awareness the message of Lord Jesus Christ, and remind us of how to lead our lives, in accordance with His teachings. Many of us have experienced the grandeur and spirit with which Christmas was celebrated in the Divine presence and the Christmas discourses Swami would deliver.

Narrating the words of the three kings who brought gifts to the baby Jesus, Swami said, “one of them stated, “This child will be a lover of God”. The second said, “No. God will love him”, and the third said “Verily, He is God himself”. Swami went on to explain:

“To love God is to be His messenger. To be loved by God is to be the son of God. The final state is to be one with God.”

As Jesus stated, “I and my Father are one.” “Thus, all persons are Messengers of God”, said Swami. This places the responsibility on each of us to divinise ourselves. Swami explained that to call oneself the son of God, one had to work for the good of others, freeing oneself from selfishness. He said, “To call yourself the son of God, you have to manifest the qualities of the Father.”

Jesus exemplified the spirit of social service. He taught, not through his words only, but through his actions too. In washing the feet of disciples, he embodied the virtue of humility and through feeding the hungry, quenching the thirst of the parched and curing the illnesses of the ailing, he epitomised kindness, compassion and love.

Jesus’ message was that of Love. So, powerful was his message, that today, the world celebrates his Advent. But, before we are lured into believing that Christmas is about feasting, drinking, singing and merry-making, let us pause and reflect on his message. The ideals Jesus exemplified should be put into practice by all of us. This would be a fitting reflection of our adoration and our devotion to God.

“God is Love. Live in Love. Start the day with Love. Spend the day with Love. End the day with Love. This is the way to God.” - Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba
