Region 1 - Guru Poorinma 2014 Celebrations

Lewisham Sivan Temple Hall was the venue for this year’s Regional Guru Poorinma Celebrations, hosted by the Bromely Sai Centre with the support of the Regional Team and other centres and groups on the 20th July 2014. The evening was very hot, but this did not stop us celebrating with our Lord.

The altar was majestic in appearance as the audience sat in anticipation of the events of the evening.

The programme commenced with the traditional lighting of the lamps, followed by Vedic and Guru Stotram prayers which were accompanied by Darshan clips of our Beloved Swami projected for all to see. The evening then proceeded with Guru Bhajans which were well supported by the congregation and truly felt like we were in Prashanthi with Swami sitting on his chair with us.

Bromley’s SSE children then sang 3 hymns; they sang their hearts out and it was fantastic to see some of the younger children, who are under the age of 10, singing solo verses with smiles on their faces.

The celebrations continued with our Honoured Guest Speaker Brother Prem Anosh one of Swami’s Students who spoke about his experiences with Swami along with the importance of Guru Poornima. Hearing about Swami’s games that he would play with the students was both entertaining and thought provoking.

The celebrations continued with a Youth Musical Item. The two singers, Sister Mathurini and Brother Sharavanan, recollected how the last time they had sung together was in the Divine presence of our Beloved Swami in Prasanthi Nilayam over 16 years ago, as part of the UK group – Sai Mahimaa 3. Both singers were accompanied by tabla players, Brother Sankar and myself, from the centre. A mixture of classical Bhajans and Karanatic songs followed that were well appreciated by all.

A clip of one of Bhagwan’s previous Guru Poornima discourses was played, followed by the concluding prayers and Aarathi. The final bhajan being in praise of Lord Siva, was appropriate and pleasing to all present, given that our celebrations were taking place in the shadow of the splendid Sivan Temple Tower.

The evening was a great success with the overall feeling of Swami’s presence being felt; devotees left with a sense of renewed energy, peace and joy to reflect on our Lord’s innumerable spiritual messages.
