Region 2 - YAP: Cleaning Up the Park

On 20th June 2015, a small group of 9 youth undertook the task of picking up litter around Cassiobury Park, Watford. We split up into groups of 3 and aided members of the ‘Friends of Cassiobury Park’ group with clearing litter found in the nature reserve, and in the main areas of the park itself. Swami graced us with little rain, contrary to the weather forecast for that day. We spent around 2 hours picking up litter and, I can say on behalf of all those present there, it was a truly wonderful way to do Seva. Swami has said countless times before in many of his talks about how we should serve our Divine Mother Earth, and how it is our responsibility. The youth present were given an incredible opportunity to do just that. We were truly able to see the beauty of Mother Nature after having cleared away the litter, especially those who had done the nature reserve, we were able to see just how much of a difference a single piece of litter makes to the beauty of the environment.

Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, where I felt I could be at one with nature, and the litter picking itself was a somewhat therapeutic activity, where I could collect my thoughts. It was suggested that in the future, we should incorporate Namasmarana into the activity. It was a wonderful experience and we would like to return as a group on a yearly basis, if not monthly.
